Committees and Boards

Boards and council appointed committees help to advise and inform the Reeve, Councillors and Staff on matters that impact the public.  These boards and committees help support good decision-making and ensure the municipality is open and accountable.

The Township of Jocelyn Landfill Committee is comprised of representatives from Jocelyn Township. The Committee is responsible for overseeing landfill and recycling policies and programs, as well as the operation of the Share Shed.

The Planning Board represents the Island’s four municipalities: the Townships of St. Joseph, Jocelyn, and Hilton, and the Village of Hilton Beach. The Board has ten members appointed by the Island municipalities and typically includes both elected and non-elected representatives selected by the councils of the day.  Its mandate is to provide advice and assistance with respect to planning matters affecting the planning area, as referred by the respective councils or by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

The Planning Board is also responsible for preparing an Official Plan for the represented municipalities.

Algoma District Services Administration Board (ADSAB) was created by the Province through the District Social Services Administrations Boards Act to deliver specified programs in the ADSAB jurisdiction:

  • Social Services Programs
  • Children’s Services (Child Care and Early Years Act)
  • Housing Services (Housing Services Act)
  • Ontario Works (Ontario Works Act)
  • Paramedic Services
  • Land Ambulance (Ambulance Act)
  • ADSAB is governed by a 12 Member Board representing 20 Municipalities and the Territory Without Municipal Organization (TWOMO).

ADSAB funding is provided from the province and the member municipalities. The provincial contribution is provided through service agreements or legislation for all programs while the municipal share is apportioned to the member municipalities utilizing the approved apportionment model. Algoma District Services Administration Board Website

Algoma Public Health (APH) is a public health agency committed to improving health and reducing social inequities in health through evidence-informed practice.

APH has a main office in Sault Ste. Marie and three offices in the Algoma district: Blind River, Elliot Lake and Wawa. 

The APH mandate is to deliver legislated public health services and community programs. Algoma Public Health is governed by an autonomous Board of Health and have strong community partnerships throughout the Algoma district.

The St. Joseph Island Museum Board includes representatives from all four Island municipalities. It is responsible for the museum’s maintenance planning, operations, staffing, programming, and financial matters. The Board focuses on fundraising, events, and community activities.
