Voter Information

Who can vote?

Eligible voters for municipal elections must be: 

  • A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old
  • A resident OR a property owner or tenant OR the spouse of an owner or tenant in the Township of Jocelyn
Who can be a candidate?

Eligible candidates for municipal elections must be:

  • A Canadian citizen and at least 18 years old 
  • A resident of Jocelyn Township, a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality or the spouse of such non-resident owner or tenant
  • Not legally prohibited from voting; and not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.  Candidates are also required to pay a fee of $100 ($200 for head of council) and those running in municipalities with more than 4,000 electors are also required to obtain 25 endorsement signatures when they submit their nomination.
Who cannot vote?
  • Serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
  • Corporations
  • Acting as executor or trustee or in another representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
  • Convicted of a corrupt practice described in Section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act

For municipal elections on October 26, contact your municipality to update or add your information to the voters list.

 

From September 1 to October 26, 2026, you can check whether you are on the Voters’ List and submit an Application to Amend the Voters’ List to update your information, add or remove your name, or request the removal of a deceased elector.

An Application to Amend the Voters’ List may be submitted in person at the Jocelyn Township Municipal Office or by attending the Advance Voting or Election Day location.

NOTE:  Those individuals intending to vote by mail-in ballot and who require an amendment to the Voters’ List must complete and submit both the Application to Amend Voters’ List and the Mail-In Voting Ballot Request Form.

2026 VOTING METHODS

The 2026 Municipal Election shall be conducted using in-person paper ballot voting, with provisions for advance voting and restricted mail-in voting.

MAIL-IN VOTING

Mail-in voting shall be available only to eligible electors who reside outside of St. Joseph Island. Valid Government Issued ID that confirms that the individual(s) do not live on St. Joseph Island must be provided to qualify for Mail-in voting.

Eligible Electors (as per the Municipal Elections Act, S.O. 1996, as amended) must register in advance with the Township office no later than September 25, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. EST. (the “Deadline”) to receive a mail-in voting kit. Any registrations that are received after the Deadline will be automatically rejected and will be required to vote on Election Day or at the Advance Poll.

Registration may be completed:

  • In person at the Township Office; or
  • By scheduled virtual appointment with Township staff for identity verification

Completed mail-in ballots:

  • Must be returned by mail
  • Must include valid Canadian postage
  • Must be received prior to the close of polls on October 26, 2026 at 8:00 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • No ballots will be accepted via the Township office drop box
  • No mail-in ballots will be accepted without Canadian postage

SPECIAL VOTING ASSISTANCE

Where an elector:

  • Is unable to leave their residence;
  • Is unable to access a mail-in voting kit;

The elector may request assistance from the Township.

Upon request and verification, appointed Township/ Election staff shall attend the elector’s residence with a ballot box to facilitate voting.

Arrangements must be made in advance with the Township Office.

Voting shall take place on Monday, October 26, 2026.

  •  Hours of voting shall be 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Location: Township Office, 3670 5th Side Road, Hilton Beach, Ontario

 

ADVANCE VOTING

An advance poll shall be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026

  • Location: Township Office
  • Hours shall be determined by the Clerk and publicly advertised

On Election Day, the Clerk will declare the unofficial results. Results will be shared on the Municipal website as soon as possible once the voting period closes.
